Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your

despatch secret of the 7th ultimo with reference to the pur-

chase in London of subsidiary coinage for this Colony.

2.

I have conferred on the matter with the Colonial Secretary

and the Treasurer and they are both of the opinion, with which

I concur, that it is not in the remotest degree likely that

the previous knowledge of any intended purchases of silver in

Lendon leaks out through the Government offices in this Celony.

The only officers who see the papers dealing with orders fer

subsidiary coins are the Colonial Secretary, the Treasurer and

the Assistant Colonial Secretary. Certain clerks see the papers

in the course, of registration and copying but it is extremely

improbable that it would occur to them that such information

was of value or, if it did, that they would be in a position

to make use of such information to their advantage.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

3.

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN M.P.
